Werfenweng lies at the foot of the Tennengebirge. The Hochkönig and the Dachstein massif, as well as the Hohe and Niederen Tauern are nearby. This makes it a fantastic starting point for alpine hut tours and hiking, with 85 km of hiking trails and climbing routes.

Werfener Hütte, located at 1,969 m above sea level at the foot of the Hochthron, is the highest managed refuge in the Salzburg Tennengebirge. Here you have a fantastic panorama: in the east the Dachstein massif, in the south the main Alpine ridge with the 3000m high peaks of Großglockner and Wiesbachhorn and in the west the Hochkönig massif.
There are a few options to reach the hut but the easiest way is to hike from Wengarau, pass the Elmaualm and then take the steep ascent to the Werfener Hutte (approx. 2.5 hours hiking time)
